Really Knowing God

What does the Lord mean to you? If He chose to walk away

from you, what would you miss? What would be different in your

life? Think also about a good friend you have. Think of all the time

that has been spent getting to really know each other. You can even

at times finish each other’s sentences, and know each other’s likes

and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. Maybe even at the beginning,

before the friendship even took off, you knew about one another, but

you didn’t really know them. Now think if that person said to you, “I

don’t want to be your friend anymore,” and they were gone. What

had taken you years to build was now over. How would you feel?

This person who knew you so well and you loved, was now out of

your life.

Jeremiah 1:5 tell us, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew

you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a

prophet to the nations.”

Matthew 10:30 says, “But the very hairs of your head are

numbered.”

Imagine knowing someone so well that you even know the exact

number of strands of their hair. Reflect again on the verse in

Jeremiah – before He formed us, He knew us. Wow! If anybody truly

knows us, it is God. How well do we know Him? We can know a lot

about Him, but how well do we really know Him? If He were to say

goodbye to us, what would we notice missing? Would we only be

concerned with our salvation and where we were to spend eternity?

If we were to lose a friend we loved, our minds would think

back to some great times. Times when they had really been there for

us, made us laugh, listened to our problems, and were there to give us

a hug, smile or kind word.

How close is the Lord to us – or should I say how close are we

to Him? How much of a personal relationship do we really have with

Him? The Bible gives us many definitions as to how God feels about

us. He is called our Father. He says we are His friends. He is our

strength, our joy, our rock and it goes on and on. So, He is many

things to us, and loves us. How do we feel about Him? What words

do we use to describe Him to others or even to ourselves? How often

do we tell others about Him? Having a great friend here on earth, we

know, involves a lot of time but it’s worth it for us. How much time

do we spend with the Lord? Do we spend enough time just to get

our requests in or are we truly spending quality time with Him? To

have a growing two-way friendship here on earth we both must give.

With God, He already gave us His best and He continues giving, but

how much are we giving? Are we truly giving to get or just truly

giving?
